What is the GED?

The GED, also known as General Educational Development or general equivalency degree, demonstrates a person’s proficiency in high school subjects such as language arts, mathematics, science, and social science. It is an alternative to a high school diploma for those who are unable to complete high school. The GED test is made of five subtests. These subtests cover each of the subjects. The one exception is language arts, which has two subtests. One subtest covers reading comprehension while the other subtest covers writing. Individuals must pass each of the subtests in order to receive GED credit.

How Can the GED Help You?

Adults who are unable to finish high school often feel that their career and higher education opportunities are limited because they do not have a high school diploma. Many employers who require a high school diploma will accept the GED as a comparable substitute. They will accept it because students who pass the GED demonstrate that they have a thorough understanding of the basic high school subjects. With the GED, adults who did receive their high school diploma can apply for jobs that are for high school graduates. They can also apply to post-secondary programs at community colleges, technical schools, and colleges.

How Can You Prepare for the GED?

There are several ways for adults to prepare for the GED. For those who prefer using online study aides, there are many websites that provide sample questions and review exercises. For those who are interested in working with others to prepare for the GED, there are GED preparation classes that they can enroll in. In addition to these preparation methods, individuals can also use GED preparation books that can be found at bookstores or libraries.

High School Diploma Versus GED

November 29th, 2008

What exactly are the differences between a high school diploma and a GED? Students may wonder why they should finish years of high school in pursuit of a diploma when a few tests can earn them a GED. Is one better than the other? Can a GED benefit a student?

A high school diploma usually requires a student to complete their curriculum at a traditional public school within three years after turning 18. In order to receive a diploma, students must complete coursework determined by the school district and state government. Curricula can vary between school districts and states, but students generally take four years to complete all diploma course requirements.

Most students who have a high school diploma qualify for entry-level jobs and typically earn more than those who lack a diploma. Students hoping to advance within a company may need additional college training. Many employers, colleges, universities, military branches, and law enforcement agencies prefer applicants with traditional high school diplomas rather than GEDs. However, there are some benefits to earning a GED.

GED are given to students who pass a series of tests given in five different academic subjects. In order to pass these tests, students must score higher than 60% of the sample set of graduating seniors. Typically, students must prepare thoroughly to pass all tests. Students who wish to take the GED must not have graduated from or still be enrolled in high school and must be over the age of 16. The exams take about seven hours to complete. Some students take preparation courses before taking the GED.

Many community colleges do accept applicants possessing a GED. Students who have difficulties completing high school, who don’t have time, or who failed to complete high school may greatly benefit from the GED. It is the closest, most well-recognized equivalent to the high school diploma. However, it has limitations, and not all institutions and academic organizations consider it sufficient for admission or employment.

What’s On the GED Test?

The five major subjects that GED tests are language arts in reading, language arts in writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Within each subject are a series of sub-topics, which are tested with individual methods depending on subject. In the math section, for example, calculators and diagrams can be used for part of the testing, but not for all. Half of the writing section is multiple choice, while the other half is an essay question that is scored completely separate from the standard 200 to 800 range scoring. Established in 1942 during World War II, the GED (General Educational Development) credential was created as a means for young war veterans to complete high school. Many of these individuals had been drafted right from Virtual high school, and in preparation for entering the U.S. workforce, having a GED was considered imperative. Nowadays, however, the GED is available not just to military individuals, but to the public in general.

Why Get a GED?

These days, the weight of a Online GED is still considered significant when applying for post-secondary schools or jobs, or getting the opportunity to advance from one’s existed work position. With our increasingly competitive economic market, having a GED under one’s belt can be extremely beneficial. This remains true for several reasons.

First, the GED is given the same weight as a traditional high school diploma. Over 95 percent of school officials and employers consider the GED Programs to be a worthy diploma equivalency credential. Secondly, the GED exams, which are overseen by the Center for Adult Learning and Education Credentials, are updated periodically to meet current standards of education and economic circumstances.

The GED tests were most recently changed in January 2002, enacting several differences. The most notable is its heavy emphasis on business-related topics. Every subject touches on its application to business in one form or other. For example, the writing section tests one’s ability to best compose a cover letter or resume and to analyze and correct the format of various business documentation and correspondence. Social studies covers everything from world and U.S. history to civics and government. Having a general understanding of the social history of various countries is extremely relevant to our increasingly global economy.

Costs Of Distance Learning

November 18th, 2008

Distance learning is education made available in a correspondence format. That is, individuals can receive the same level of education as traditional students by studying from their own homes. This idea was made popular by the Distance Education and Training Council after its founding in 1926.

Students in original distance learning were reliant on mail correspondence and some telecommunications. With the expansion of communication forms, as well as advancements in online correspondence, distance learning is now extremely common and only growing in popularity. Those seeking to complete education standards find help with online resources, or mailed materials.

What Costs Can I Expect?

The costs of distance learning depend on what you’re studying and from where you are pursuing your diploma. Aid materials also account for some of the costs. In many locations, distance learning costs the same as if one were to enroll in a traditional school. Materials may or may not be included in those costs, but more often than not must be purchased separately.

Because the monetary costs are relatively similar, one must then take into consideration the benefits of distance learning. Pursuing this form of education provides you with your own pace of learning, as well as allowing you the freedom to study from far away locations. The benefits oftentimes outweigh the costs, and as a result many individuals choose distance learning over traditional schooling.
