The GED, also known as General Educational Development or general equivalency degree, demonstrates a person’s proficiency in high school subjects such as language arts, mathematics, science, and social science. It is an alternative to a high school diploma for those who are unable to complete high school. The GED test is made of five subtests. These subtests cover each of the subjects. The one exception is language arts, which has two subtests. One subtest covers reading comprehension while the other subtest covers writing. Individuals must pass each of the subtests in order to receive GED credit.

Adults who are unable to finish high school often feel that their career and higher education opportunities are limited because they do not have a high school diploma. Many employers who require a high school diploma will accept the GED as a comparable substitute. For those who are interested in working with others to prepare for the GED, there are GED preparation classes that they can enroll in. In addition to these preparation methods, individuals can also use GED preparation books that can be found at bookstores or libraries.
